Hello, this is how to play jazz piano Today I’ll talk about jazz piano practice I’ve already uploaded similar video so this is remake of that Let’s get started This method is mainly for pianists but could adapt to another instrument partially Ok, let’s do stretches before playing instrument This is necessary whether or not what is your instrument A method will depends on whether breath or finger instrument though Let’s massage your arm and finger And I recommend dynamic stretch Especially in winter season, you should dynamic stretch enough But don’t over do it! Do it moderately! Next method may be only for me A piano is the big instrument for me, physically and mentally For example, a guitar or wind instruments are often small for human So these instruments can be handle physically easily, you can go out with it anytime A physically large thing is hard to be handle mentally For me, it’s a piano I want to be familiar with this instrument so I play all 88 keys before practice like this I’m trying to absorb musical range of the piano by closing eyes while playing 88 notes So if you’re familiar with piano enough, you don’t need to do this Ok, next practice is Hanon I play 1 and 2 and more if you could I always play 1 and 2 before playing piano Let’s use metronome, set 2 -4 click and 60 or 70 BPM 2- 4 feeling (after beat, back beat) like this By the way, rock music and Jazz music is based on after-beat not on-beat Classical music is on-beat, like 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4 Sometimes I change like this Start from 3rd of left hand This is not necessary but if you wanna another taste, try it! It will take approximately 10 minutes from first stretch (This is 60 minutes program) Ok, lets start scale practice I’ll use Jamey II-V-I progression Please see page 1 There are II-V-I progressions in all keys Form Dm7 – G7 – CM7 Play dorian and mixolydian and ionian mode on each chord Let’s play in all keys You may think that all keys seem to be really hard but it’s not so hard My advice is that you should hear these scales sound more Don’t be a prisoner of music score If you don’t have time, play 5 keys at least C F Bb Eb Ab And if you’re having trouble playing Dorian and Mixolydian scale, play only Major scale first Because Dorian and Mixolydian scale comes from Major scale, it’s only different a start note Dorian is 2nd and Mixolydian is 5th from major scale Ok, let’s talk about left hand voicing See, this is really basic voicing with root note, it’s ok because this practice is not a chord practice If you know inversion mode with tension note, play it but don’t disturb right hand I mean you don’t have to worry about your left hand now So chord-less is also better Play only scale with right hand Wind-instrument players also can practice this Just to let you know, this book has 2 CD backing tracks Ok, let’s change Mixolydian scale This is D dorian This is G be-bop scale D dorian and G be-bop scale Add major 7th note (F#) to G mixolydian scale, it’s called be-bop scale This scale sounds jazzy Be-bop scale is really popular scale so if someone play or blow this scale, they are probably jazz player Make sure that Be-bop scale is used for descending motion And CM7 is C ionian, nothing gonna change Ok, this practice will take approximately 30 minutes till end We have 20 minutes or so till the end of the program (60 min program) Today, I’ll show you the song which is the best for scale practicing Shiroi – Nami (White wave), music by Sadao Watanabe Watanabe Sadao-san is the most famous saxophone artist in Japan and worldwide If you don’t know this beautiful song, check it out on google or YouTube! This is a bossa nova song And really good song for practice These chords are used first 12 bars 2 bars each chord except for Dm7-G7 Let’s play this song First 4 bars is Bb ionian scale and Eb lydian scale, so you can play Bb major scale only Next 4 bars is Ab ionian scale and Db lydian scale, so you can play Ab major scale only This is analysis And Dm7 is D dorian, G7 is G mixolydian so you can play C major scale through out the progression But this time I use be-bop scale on G7 chord That’s all How do we practice with this song First of all, play theme melody again and again till you memorize it You don’t need to play as written on the score, you can add your taste anytime After that, play available scales on each chord I’ve just played available scale on each chord freely, there is no rule in scale Let’s play again and again till your ideas or own phrases show up! I’ve improvised 12 bars with only major scales, you can do it! Ok, let’s see more chords Next chord is Cm7-F7-BbM7 It’s kinda “Autumn leaves” chords! I’ve used altered scale, blues scale on dominant 7th chord but these scales are based on basic scales I showed before And I recommend that you should play “cool” anytime whatever scales you choose Scale practice is really boring so you should add taste it sometimes like playing songs But don’t be overdo or you’ll get burned out easily! But personally I think that the more you’re beginner, the more you have to practice hard About me, I had practiced for 4 hours on weekday and for 8 hours on holiday It was hard days because I was full-time worker (of course now) but that experience made me who I am today Everything will be hard until getting on the right track! I hope you got something from this video! Thanks for watching my video!
